Having seen what worship is and how we can worship God inside and outside the Church, let us look at the power of worship in this fourth post in the ‘What is Worship’ series.
Remember the spectacular Pentecost experience of the first Christians in Acts 2?
It didn’t occur just like that.
I mean, days before the feast of Pentecost, the Apostles, Mary and other believers used to meet together in the upper room to worship the Lord continually (Acts 1:14) – and the Lord chose the day of Pentecost to anoint their worship with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit like never before! And the prophecy of Christ (Acts 1:5,8) was fulfilled in an incredible manner.
You see, our Church was born in worship.
How awesome and humbling is that!
So it’s but understandable that all believers are called to be worshippers - people who declare God’s praise (1 Peter 2:9).
The power of worship and praise is manifold:
1. Worship heals our pride - we saw how in the first article in this series.
2. Worship invites God’s Presence (Psalm 22:3)
3. Worship establishes the atmosphere of Heaven on earth – for in Heaven (Revelation 4:8), worship is as perpetual as God’s very presence!
4. Worship connects us with the Holy Spirit in special/divine ways (For e.g. Acts 13:2).
5. Worship can evoke God’s supernatural acts including healing and deliverance (Acts 16:25-26, 1 Samuel 16:23)
There are many instances of worship, which led to God’s moving that I can think of in my life. The first miracle I witnessed was the physical healing of a lady while leading worship; the fact that she was a Hindu made it all the more remarkable.
There’s another example of a friend of mine pronouncing a word of healing for a bedridden lady while leading worship. She walked out of her bed that very moment in her home – she wasn’t even in the worship session when the healing prayer was made!
Then there are those times we have prayed for the Holy Spirit in worship and seen people being blessed powerfully – with emotional healing, charismatic gifts, deliverance and so on.
The power of worship is not something we just read about in the Bible – it’s something we can experience today, the instances mentioned above are testimonies to this truth.
